1880-1959. British sculptor, born in New
York. He experimented with abstract forms,
but is chiefly known for muscular nude
figures such as Genesis 1931 (Whitworth Art
Gallery, Manchester). In 1904 he moved to
England, where most of his major work was
done. An early example showing the strong
influence of ancient sculptural styles is the
angel over the tomb of Oscar Wilde 1912 (Pere
Lachaise cemetery, Paris), while Rock Drill
1913-14 (Tate Gallery, London) is Modernist
and semi-abstract. Such figures outraged
public sensibilities. He was better
appreciated as a portraitist (bust of
Einstein, 1933), and in later years executed
several monumental figures, notably the
expressive bronze of St Michael and the Devil
1959 (Coventry Cathedral).
